About the role:

Support the Area East Utilities team and Area East Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) team in the management of HSW for all utility works on area east, including the implementation of the SCS H&S Management System (HSMS) to ensure compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 certification and with HS2 Works Information.

The position plays a key role in helping to establish and maintain the highest and where possible, new industry HSW standards for the project.

The role will be full time and a site-based role. The candidate must have suitable experience working with / on utilities projects (Gas, Water and Power) including working in the highways.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide operational advice on the practical implementation of the SCS H&S policies and procedures and legal requirements for the Area East utilities works.
  • Provide operational and functional advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents and ill health with regards utility works.
  • Assist the Area East Utilities Manager and other members of the utilities and Area East HSW team in the implementation and monitoring of the Health and Safety Management System including reviewing SCS and subcontractor safe systems of works (RAMS, WPP’s, TBS’s etc.)
  • Establish, manage and maintain relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, HSE and utility sub-contractors.
  • Plan for and undertake HSW surveillance and assurance, appropriate to the risk profile of the work activities, for all operational utility sites in Area East.
  • Attend HAZID reviews and assist with the preparation of HSW risk assessments and safe systems of work for utilities works.
  • Assist with the monitoring, analysis and reporting of H&S performance. Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention
  • Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents should they occur in Area East.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of H&S training/ briefings in relation to utilities works.
  • Promote best practice, capture best practice and ensure it is fed-back into the business and parent companies
  • Provide advice, guidance and independence with regards to the assessment of and appointment of sub-contractors.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners' Environment and Sustainability Policies, Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company's operations and ensure that the requirements, as applicable within their discipline, are implemented on the project

The Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • At least three years’ Health & Safety experience in the relevant field of Utilities (Gas, Water, Power)
  • Knowledge of HSG47  and GS6
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate
  • Membership of IOSH - Tech IOSH
  • Collaborative behaviours

Desirable:

  • EUSR trained
  • NRSWA trained
  • An understanding of temporary work requirements for utilities works
  • Five years’ experience in relevant field of Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety
  • Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma, Degree or equivalent NCRQ or NVQ
  • Membership of IOSH - Grad IOSH
